It's been around for more than a half century. It's a staple sweatshirt used to promote alma maters and sports teams; and it happens to be banned often in the U.K.
What started as a warm top by Champion to keep frozen-warehouse workers warm in NY (according to the New York Times) has become a big subject of debate. A few English conservatives and shopkeepers argue that the common hooded sweatshirt is generally worn by hoodlums and shoplifters to justify its prohibition in stores and clubs.
